So I've written a book, now what?

I'm very proud of the fact that I've written a book. I wrote it back in November as part of Nanowrimo. So needless to say, it is a very, very rough draft. I made up my mind to let it sit until February when I would pull it out and start seeing if I had anything good at all.

Well, its February.....

The first thing that I found out was that editing is very intimidating when you're looking at a piece that large. Do you do a line edit? Do you read for content? What do you do?

I didn't have the answers so I decided to do what's smart and ask someone. I got some good advice from a friend who's been there and done that. Thank you!! So here's what I'm doing for now.

I bought a notebook and for each page of the novel, I have at least one page in the notebook. I'm writing down the scene, the characters, the Point of view, a brief synopsis, questions I have for myself, and impressions ( what I think I can do to make it better). I kind of feel like I'm breaking it down into manageable chunks.

Rather than looking at it as one huge piece, I'm looking at it as a lot of pieces that make up the the bigger piece.

I think I can do this now. My goal for this book is to make it submittable by the end of December. We'll see what happens.

Sounds like you're working with a good plan and a realistic goal! Good Luck!! Can't wait to hear how it goes. ^_^

good for you. I am in the same boat, only I have two books that need editing, so I can totally sympathize. I hope that it is going well for you and I look forward to reading more about your adventures in prose.
