Okay, I’m not referring to streaking across the football field wearing the bare minimal (excuse the pun). I’m talking about the decision between using your flash and relying on natural lighting. As you can see in the above two photos, the use natural light and the flash can produce different results. In this example, the flash (photo on the bottom) gives the picture a brighter, more dramatic look compared to the one taken with natural lighting. Also, the shine in the ribbon is enhanced with the flash. The type of lighting you use depends on your goal. If, like the example here, your subject is a still life, you can try both then decide which picture you prefer. If you need to “freeze” the object, then you’ll have to use the flash if there isn’t enough natural light to allow for a fast shutter speed.
