Tip #18: Add a Little Sparkle

I’ve already discussed the use of the reflector to add light to your subject. In this picture, I used the add-on flash to provide just a touch of light to the teen’s face. The sun was partially hidden behind the clouds and already starting to head toward the western horizon. Because I didn’t want the additional light to overpower him, and make him look vampirish, I adjusted it so that it was underexposed by half a step (see your flash manual for more details). Had he been looking at the camera, you would have been able to see the white light reflected in his eyes. The benefit of the fill flash is this type of lighting is that it gives the eyes a little sparkle, and a little more life.
