  • Spinster's Folly by Marsha Ward

    Spinster's Folly by Marsha Ward

    Today is a real treat :) I have Marsha Ward here today to talk a little about herself, how she writes, why she writes, and if she's a pantser or a planner... How did you become interested in the Civil War?
    Author Robert Newton Peck once said that every historical writer has their favorite war. While his was the French and Indian War, mine turned out to be the Civil War. I don’t know what sparked my passion for it. It could have been reading some of historian Bruce Catton’s work, or Gone With the Wind, during high school. My interest certainly did not stem from a personal or family issue, since none of my relatives fought on either side. If they had, they’ve have been Union soldiers, and my characters fought for the South.
    That said, my current novels actually have post-Civil War settings, dealing with the aftermath of that great struggle, so they fit more in the classification of Western Migration novels, or Settling of the West.
    Very cool. Tell us about your novels.
    The Man from Shenandoahbegins as Carl Owen returns from the Civil War to find the family farm destroyed, his favorite brother dead, food scarce, and his father determined to leave the Shenandoah Valley to build a cattle empire in Colorado Territory. Crossing the continent, Carl falls in love with his brother's fiancée while set to wed another girl, but he might lose everything if the murderous outlaw Berto Acosta has his way. Carl battles a band of outlaws, a prairie fire, blizzards, a trackless waterless desert, and his own brother-all for the hand of feisty Ellen Bates.
    Ride to Ratoncontinues from there: after losing the heart of his fiancée to his brother, James Owen leaves home to make a new life for himself. The turbulent world of post-Civil War Colorado Territoryis fraught with danger and prejudice that increase his bitter loneliness as personal setbacks threaten to break him. Then James's journey brings him into contact with another wayfarer, beautiful young Amparo Garcés, who has come from Santa Fe to Colorado to marry a stranger. Through a twist of fate, their futures are changed forever when their lives are merged in a marriage of convenience. James and Amparo undertake a hazardous horseback trek over Raton Passto Santa Fe, battling their personal demons, a challenging language barrier, and winter's raging storms.
    My third novel, Trail of Storms, goes back to tell the tale of a peripheral character from the first novel. Jessie Bingham and her family flee post-Civil War Virginia after her sister suffers a brutal attack, and together endure a perilous trek to New Mexico Territory. When she hears her former sweetheart, James Owen, has taken a wife, Jessie accepts Ned Heizer’s marriage proposal on the condition they wait until journey’s end to wed. But then Jessie encounters James again... and he isn’t married now!
    Spinster’s Follyis the fourth book in the series, and tells Marie Owen’s story. Marie lives in a land that is long on rough characters and short on fitting suitors. Her desire to get married before she winds up a spinster propels her into making hasty decisions that drive her into the arms of a sweet-talking predator, landing her in unimaginable dangers.
    Wow, all of those books sound like they would be great reads. How much research was necessary to make your books so historically believable and where did you conduct most of your research? Did you visit the locations where you set your novels?
    I read 150 books to research my first novel. Some I bought, but most came from the library. Over the years that I’ve been writing the series, I have been able to do some on-the-ground research, and I recently took a trip back East to visit Civil War battlefields and other areas in preparation to write my next book. I’ve also been amassing books on the Civil War in the last year. Lots of books!
    In the earlier years, I conducted several interviews with people familiar with the areas I wanted to learn about. Photographs were also helpful, as were the state guides produced as WPA projects during the Great Depression. I’ve found several very good online sources for research on my later books.
    Are you a pantser or a planner when you write?
    I definitely write by the seat of my pants, once I have an idea for a story and know who my characters will be. I’m doing more planning now than I used to, though, so I don’t spend way too much time rewriting. However, I’ll never again write a complete synopsis early-on. That doesn’t work for me, because my brain then thinks I’ve already written the book.
    While I’m writing, I make various charts and spreadsheets to help me analyze the number of occurrances of different points-of-view, and events within scenes. This helps the revision process goes faster.
    I now use a great writing software program called yWriter5, which allows me to focus on one scene at a time. This is important, so that I don’t become daunted by the vastness of the project. A huge upside to using it is that the software is free!
    I'm a writer too, so I like to ask other writers. 'What's your writing schedule like?'
    Very fragmented. I’m easily distracted, but when I’m white-hot in the initial draft, I can write for up to eight hours, broken up by short breaks. This is only possible because I live alone.
    I wish I had a better schedule. Almost every writer I know wishes the same thing!

    I know I do lol... actually, I wish my fingers and eyelids kept up with my brain lol. Have you held a "day job" in addition to your writing?
    Yes. Through the years I mothered my children, and then worked as a journalist, an educator, and in a retail store. I’ve also volunteered with several organizations, doing websites, newsletters, and a multitude of other chores.

    Something I'm always curious about... How do you promote your books?
    I have a website and a couple of blogs, I’m active on Facebook and other social media venues, and I’m always looking for ways to let people know I’m an author, such as giving talks and networking with various groups. I find that word of mouth from enthusiastic readers drives the most sales, though.

    Advice to anyone contemplating writing a Civil War novel?
    Do thorough research, keep accessible notes, then let the fingers loose.

    Finally, How would you like to be remembered?
    As a kind person who could write a little.
    Thank you so much, Marsha, for being on my blog today... and HAPPY RELEASE DAY!!!!!!

    Book Release Party Nov. 10

    (I love that book cover!!)
    What exactly is Spinster's Folly? Marie Owen yearns for a loving husband, but Colorado Territory is long on rough characters and short on fitting suitors, so a future of spinsterhood seems more likely than wedded bliss. Her best friend says cowboy Bill Henry is a likely candidate, but Marie knows her class-conscious father would not allow such a pairing. When she challenges her father to find her a suitable husband before she becomes a spinster, he arranges a match with a neighbor's son. Then Marie discovers Tom Morgan would be an unloving, abusive mate and his mother holds a grudge against the Owen family. Marie's mounting despair at the prospect of being trapped in such a dismal marriage drives her into the arms of a sweet-talking predator, landing her in unimaginable dangers. This fourth book in the Owen Family Saga is infused with potent heart and intense grit.

    Marsha Ward is an award-winning writer and editor who has published over 900 pieces of work, including three previous novels in the Owen Family Saga, numerous newspaper articles, and sections in books on the craft of writing. She is a member of Western Writers of America, Women Writing the West, and American Night Writers Association. Born a while ago in the sleepy little town of Phoenix, Arizona, Marsha grew up with chickens, citrus trees, and lots of room to roam. She began telling stories at a very early age, regaling neighborhood chums with her tales as they snacked on her homemade sugar cookies and drank cold milk. Visiting her cousins on their ranch and listening to her father's stories of homesteading in Old Mexico and in the Tucson area reinforced Marsha's love of 19th Century Western history. After many years in the big city, Marsha now makes her home in a tiny hamlet under Central Arizona's magnificent Mogollon Rim. When she is not writing, she loves to spoil her grandchildren, travel, give talks, meet readers, and sign books. Along the Way Home-- Christi Corbett

    First, I’d like to give a big thank you to Kelly for allowing me to host her blog! I truly appreciate her sharing her readers with me as I celebrate the release of my debut novel. Along the Way Home.
    How a Stinging Rejection Led to a Book Contract Signing with Astraea Press wasn't a decision I took lightly. At the time the contract was offered (on my birthday!!!!!) I had six agents and three editors (Medallion Press, Tor/Forge, and a small press) reviewing requested partials/fulls, an R&R offer from an agent, and an offer pending from another small press.

    I happily walked away from all of the above because I believe so strongly in Astraea Press, and the niche they’ve carved out for themselves in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

    What does that mean? Let me backtrack a bit and reveal something that happened in January of 2013 that perfectly illustrates why I chose to go with Astraea.

    I was rejected by an agent who called my book lovely and sweet, raved about my writing and the storyline, but ended with the statement, “…let your characters engage in sex and describe the sex. As it stands, I’ll pass. Put the sex in and I’ll take another look.”

    I assure you, I have thick skin when it comes to rejections. I’ve racked up my fair share since I began querying, and normally take them with a grain of salt (and chocolate—lots of chocolate), but this one really bothered me. I understand if a rejection is based upon my writing style, the likability of my characters, or a flaw in the storyline—but to be rejected solely on the basis that I choose NOT to include sex? That one didn't go over well.

    So much so that I finally decided it was time to query the one publisher I’d had my eye on for months. A publisher that cares not only for the authors, but for the kind of work they attach their name to. I'd discovered Astraea Press before I started querying in September and really liked the stance the owner, Stephanie Taylor, took against unnecessary sex.

    Bottom line, I’m proud to have my book published with Astraea Press!

    I’d love to hear from you. What is a dream you never gave up on?

    Along the Way Home by Christi Corbett

    They lost everything but their dreams on the Oregon Trail…
    Kate Davis is intrigued when her father reveals his dream of starting a horse ranch in Oregon Territory. Settlers out west value a strong woman, and though she manages the financials of her father’s mercantile her competence earns her ridicule, not respect, from Virginia’s elite society.
    Jake Fitzpatrick, an experienced trail guide, wants land out west to raise cattle and crops. But dreams require money and he’s eating dandelion greens for dinner. So when a wealthy businessman offers double wages to guide his family across the Oregon Trail, Jake accepts with one stipulation—he is in complete control.
    Departure day finds Kate clinging to her possessions as Jake demands she abandon all he deems frivolous, including her deceased mother’s heirlooms. Jake stands firm, refusing to let the whims of a headstrong woman jeopardize the wages he so desperately needs—even a beautiful one with fiery green eyes and a temper to match.
    Trail life is a battle of wills between them until tragedy strikes, leaving Jake with an honor-bound promise to protect her from harm and Kate with a monumental choice—go back to everything she’s ever known or toward everything she’s ever wanted?
    Advance Praise for Along the Way Home …author Christi Corbett unfurls an unforgettable epic romance inside of an epic Western adventure. Beautifully crafted, this debut novel is a tender journey of the heart as well as a treacherous journey of many miles. Eve Paludan, author of Taking Back Tara (Ranch Lovers Romance series)
    A breathtaking account of courage and adventure along the Oregon Trail. Jillian Kent, author of The Ravensmoore Chronicles.
    A dash of action! A touch of intrigue! Loads of sweet, clean romantic promise… Reid Lance Rosenthal, Winner of 15 National Awards, #1 Best Selling Author of the Threads West, An American Sagaseries.

    So... what do you think? What the book is about... One month ago, seventeen year old Devin Miller wrecked while intoxicated—or so she’s told by the very aggravated blue-eyed boy when she wakes up from a coma. The only thing Devin remembers is the darkness holding her down and the voices-- some happy, some upset, and one very agitated. She can't remember her name, her age, where she lives, or who in the world the blue-eyed boy is. But he knows who she is, and against her better judgment, she offers to pay him for his memories so she can trick the ones closest to her into thinking she's fine. That is her first mistake.
    When Devin gets home, things start to spin out of control. People she doesn't know keep talking to her. Trey--the blue -eyed boy-- doesn't show up like he's supposed too. And the police want to talk to her about her involvement in car accident. Plus she keeps seeing flashes of the crash, but none of them make sense. What would a red plastic cup have to do with anything? And why doesn't she have any feelings for her 'boyfriend', Cooper?
    Facing DUI charges for a wreck she can't recall, Devin struggles to remember exactly what happened the night of the crash: something the real driver wants her to keep buried.
    Now, it's you chance to win. Check out the Rafflecopter and GOOD LUCK!!!!

    As a runner writing about running and the Boston Marathon, I have to do whatever I can to support those injured at this year’s event. I’ve worn race shirts, I’ve run 4.09 miles, I’ve run 26.2 miles (over a few days) for those who didn’t get to finish the race and I wore yellow and blue for the Boston Athletic Association at the River Bank Run. Now I’m asking you for help. A portion of my proceeds from Climbing Heartbreak Hill will go to the One Fund Boston. Every penny and every step counts. Run on!

    Blurb: Professional runner, Ryan Grant, blows out his knee training for another attempt at the Boston marathon and the dreaded Heartbreak Hill. Ryan retreats home, not looking for anything more than a fast recovery, but he finds solace in the arms of his tax preparer, Tara Mansfield. Tara’s cheerleading career ended abruptly and she faces an upward climb beating the stereotype as dumb blonde in her new calling as an accountant. Framed with defrauding the IRS during the last weeks of the tax season, Tara’s tentative confidence is shaken, but Ryan coaches her in ensnaring the true perpetrator. She cheers him on in discovering his identity as a coach rather than an athlete. With the help of the junkyard king and a mechanical bull, can Tara and Ryan find the courage to climb Heartbreak Hill together?
    A portion of my proceeds from Climbing Heartbreak Hill will be donated to the One Fund Boston to help those injured at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon.
    Bio: I live in the Great Lakes state with my husband, three rambunctious children and two barking Beagles (I suppose that is redundant.) When not suffering the woes of potty training three toddler/preschoolers, I enjoy reading, running (sometimes it's fleeing the craziness at home), reconstructing clothing, thrift store shopping and surfing Pinterest.com. (I spend way too much time there and am getting all kinds of exciting ideas for projects for my husband to do. He is less than thrilled by this.) I love writing romance because I enjoy stories where everything works out all right in the end and the main characters have a happily ever after. My stories are set in small towns with quirky characters that take on a life of their own.
    Excerpt: A lanky, sandy haired man on crutches elbowed his way through the door, alternating between pushing the glass door open and inching his crutches forward. He wore a red windbreaker with Lakeshore Track Club embroidered on the chest. Clutched between his left hand and the handle of his crutch was a wad of papers. It wasn’t the worst presentation of receipts she’d seen in the last three months, but it would make the top ten. She experienced a brief wave of déjà vu. A flash of his face laughing in the dark. Had she seen him before somewhere? His physique didn’t match any of the football players she had been in contact with. Surely the strange bend in his nose would stand out enough in her memory. It gave him a reckless air she found appealing. “Let me help you with that.” She hurried over to the door and kicked the stopper down to hold it open while she relieved him of the fistful of paper. A quick scan of the parking lot told her Mark’s truck hadn’t arrived yet. “Do you have an appointment?” “Your sign said walk--‐‑ins were welcome.” His voice had a pleasant timbre. Tara didn’t miss the once--‐‑over he gave her. She was used to those. It was one of the side--‐‑effects of having breast implants not written in the tri--‐‑fold brochure from the plastic surgeon: every male and one in three females will stare at your chest. At times, Tara wanted to wear a name--‐‑tag that said ‘and yes, they are fake'ʹ under her name. “Walk--‐‑ins are always welcome. We have a small break in the rush right now, so why don’t you have a seat by my desk?” Tara released the door then made her way around her desk and righted her chair. The man put the two crutches together and gingerly lowered himself into the seat. He kept his left leg extended, and Tara could see the outline of a brace around his knee through his warm--‐‑up pants. She dropped the pile of receipts into the middle of her desk and opened a new client file on her computer. “Have you been here before?” When he answered in the negative, Tara said, “Okay. Then we’ll need to go through the basics first. I’ll need all your vital stats.” “Excuse me?” “Name, address, phone number, etc.” “Oh, I thought you meant age, weight, heart rate, and blood pressure. Guess I’ve been to too many doctors lately. Ryan Grant.” He rattled off an address she recognized as one of the Ladies Night Out members. Had Yvonne been holding out on her? They owed her a favor after she had helped them get Leslie and Mark together. The last names matched so he must be family. Perhaps Yvonne’s son?

  • Someday You'll Laugh by Brenda Maxfield

    Someday You'll Laugh by Brenda Maxfield

    I remember as a little girl dreaming of my perfect wedding. I’d slink into my mother’s old dress and stick my feet into her way-too-big pumps and tromp around the back patio singing, “Here Comes the Bride!” Fast forward a few years: I have my own beautiful wedding dress my mom made for me; a real-live groom; and a massive upset stomach from a bout with the flu. Not a good combination. I wondered whether I’d make it through the ceremony.
    Wow, writing brought it all back in living color. On that fateful day, everyone told me that someday I’d laugh about it.
    Hmmm.
    Well, I did crack a smile the other day…

    Here’s the blurb for Someday You’ll Laugh:
    Stunned when her boyfriend announces they should be free to see others when he leaves for college, Brenda pastes a smile on her face and walks away. Far away. Only to find herself irresistibly drawn into the arms of another guy.
    Brenda’s previous boyfriend finds out, claims he made a huge mistake, and wants her back. She willreceive a marriage proposal, but from which one?
    Later, on her wedding day, Brenda awakens knowing something is wrong. Will she make it through the ceremony?

    Intrigued? Here's an excerpt:
    Don’t vomit in the middle of your wedding. Good advice all around. Too bad I ignored it.
    My story didn’t start with vomiting, but it did begin with a good gut wrench…
    The low sun flamed from the sky even though the time was edging toward nine-thirty at night. I squinted into the glowing horizon and my heart squeezed. I held back the tears.
    “Just ten months,” Greg whispered to me. “It’s not so long.”
    “Only forever,” I answered. I hadn’t let go of his arm for the past thirty minutes.
    He shifted his weight and settled onto the park bench. “We need to talk.”
    “We are talking.” I joined him, stretched my legs, and dipped the toes of my shoes into the loose gravel at my feet.
    His face had gone serious, and I knew I wasn’t going to like what he had to say. He gazed over my shoulder toward the playground equipment as if observing interesting twists of fine sculpture.
    I still held his arm, but now I released my death grip. My fingers remained bent, stuck in a clutched position. “What is it?”
    “I think we should see other people.” His words dropped like bricks, gaining speed as they crashed on my ears.
    My mouth fell open and I jolted to my feet, tripping over a stone which protruded from the loose rock circling the bench. I skittered a bit, and regained my balance. “See other people? What do you mean?”
    “Sit back down.” Greg pulled on my arm and coaxed me onto the bench again. “California’s a long way from here, and I think it’d be a good idea to keep our options open.”
    I sat like a wooden toy, stiff and unmoving. I knew I was staring at him, I knew my face was revealing too much, and I knew I wanted to deck him.
    “I take it you’ve given this a lot of thought.” My voice sounded so pinched, I hardly recognized it.
    “Not a lot. Some, though.” Was it my imagination or did he look like he wanted to crawl under the rock I’d just tripped over?
    Our ten months together during my senior year of 1973 evaporated into a depressing mist. I stood. “Fine. If that’s the way you want it, sounds good to me.” I coughed to try and cover up the bitterness in my tone.
    He rose beside me and his blond hair fell over his eyes. He pushed the strands aside with an absent-minded flick of his hand. “Don’t be that way. It’s a good idea, and it’ll be much easier on us. Long distance relationships are hard.”
    “How would you know?”
    “Everyone says so.”
    “Fine,” I repeated. “Now to make sure I have it straight — we’re both free to see other people, right?”
    He nodded, but I thought I detected a kernel of doubt beginning to grow. His brows crinkled and his blue eyes narrowed.
    I went on. “Okay. I guess we’re both on the same page then. You leave in a couple hours for college in California while I stay here in Washington. And we’re both free to date other people. Are we going to communicate at all, or are we stopping that too?”
    I deserved a medal. My voice poured out words as if reciting the latest cookie recipe, not closing down a relationship that had cruised along for the better part of a year.
    Greg’s eyes stayed focused on mine. “We can write. I think it only takes a couple of days for a letter to get here from California. You’ll write me, won’t you?”
    I raised my chin. I could keep up the ruse for another few minutes. “Of course. We’ll both write. It’s a plan.”
    I leaned over and kissed him. I didn’t give him time to kiss me back.
    “Safe travels,” I said and smiled with warmth I didn’t feel. If he was dumping me, I was going out with class. I made certain the look in my eyes matched my smile, then turned and walked away, swaying my hips as if there were no tomorrow.
    Eat your heart out, Greg Johnson.
    Eat your heart out, but good.
    There was sadness inside me somewhere, but the anger and growing nausea were doing a masterful job of covering it up.
    Keep our options open, indeed.
    So be it.
    The creep.

    You know... from my 'What if the Grace Awards were like the Oscars' post? CLICK HERE for a Refresher...

    Well, they were announced a little late, but CROSSING THE DEEP WON!!!!

    Now, if I were to lose... I'd be a little sad.
    It'll be the best. day. ever!
    It's truly... honestly... an honor just to be nominated! Thank you all for nominating me for the Grace Awards!!

    Here's the link if you don't believe me... I know, it's hard to believe...
    So... *IF* this was like the Academy Awards, I'd get to make a speech right about now. Since this *is* my Oscars, here we go...
    " I want to thank, first and foremost, God because He put me on this wild ride. To Charlotte Kaufman for filling me in on what 'Nanowrimo' was. To the July '10 Mamas for all the encouragement! You kept me going. To the Feb. '07 Mamas for being so supportive. To Stephanie Taylor and Astraea Press. Thanks for taking a chance on me. To my family for putting up with my writing and the time it takes. I know it's not easy on you. To my sister Karen and my Mama for loving Crossing the Deep and being so excited for me. To my daddy... I wish he could have been here to see it. To K. Victoria Chase for being such a good friend to me all through this. To Megan Wille for pushing me. To Jan Christiansen for giving me priceless advice (both in writing and in life). To Wendy Knight for being such an awesome, pick me up when I'm feeling down, friend.
    And to my sister, Kathy, who has read every draft of Crossing the Deep and was my biggest supporter and encourager. If it wasn't for her saying I could do it, I never would have. Thank you all!" Cue the orchestra.
    I have other things on my mind besides winning the Grace Award (I still think it's pretty cool to say that... )
    In no particular order, here are the top 3 things I'm wondering about right this second...
    1. Contemporary 'Civil War' Zombies (See my facebook page for more information on what the heck that is about... https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kelly-Martin-Author/136506059763138 )
    2. If I really can get 2,000 Twitter followers (See my twitter account to help out... https://twitter.com/martieKay )
    and... 3. How cool it is that I 'know' Rachel Van Dyken! Ok... I don't know her, know her. When I signed with Astraea Press, Rachel was one of the people who wrote 'welcome' on my 'official' first thread. I was star struck, let me tell you. I knew who she was and most of all, how successful she was as a writer. I was all like, "Rachel Van Dyken talked to me... " BUT, once you get to know her, you realize, that's her. She talks to everyone... and has never once acted like she was higher on the hog (Southern reference for ya... ) than the rest of us. Plus, she's an awesome writer! My mother loves her regencies, and I very much like her New Adult line. A few days ago, Rachel signed a big ole contract with a big publishing company-- livin' the dream as it were... and she's still just as sweet as ever. Here are a few of her books if you are one of the two or three people in the world who haven't bought a copy ;)

  • WHISKEY WHISPERS of the PAST from the Awesome Lynn Spangler!

    WHISKEY WHISPERS of the PAST from the Awesome Lynn Spangler!

    After doing all the hard work yesterday with a 13 blog tour for my new book, SAINT SLOAN. I decided to take it easy today and let someone else write for me ;) And you guys are in for a treat. Lynn Spangler is here to talk about her new book! Here she is:

    Whiskey Whispers of the Past by Lynn Spangler

    First of all, I'd like to thank Kelly for having me as a guest on her blog today.

    How do I fit writing into my day? I don't work which is a major plus when one chooses writing as a profession. I generally write in the mornings after I've had a cup or two of coffee running through my system. I have two places I write. My office and my comfy recliner. When writing in the recliner, I often have my furry canine daughter as my co-pilot (she's next to me as I write this post.) As a housewife, I also do such things as laundry while I'm writing. I simply take a break to change the wash around or fold the dried laundry. Then I pick up where I left off, usually without skipping a beat.
    I generally do not write over the weekend or in the evenings unless I have edits due. This allows me to spend time with my husband and daughter who are either working or in school when I write in the morning. I feel this schedule is an excellent balance between writing and what is truly most important to me -- my family.

    While this writing process is not overly prolific, it works for me. It took me about a month to write my recently released story, Whiskey Whispers of the Past. I'm no speed demon by any stretch of the imagination but I'm comfortable with my writing situation.

    If inspiration strikes me in the afternoon or evening, I have a notebook I keep next to my trusty recliner (can you tell it's my favorite seat in the house?) I'll jot down plot ideas or even continue the storyline. I'll add whatever I wrote in my notebook to the story the following day. I also use my iPad to do research and the like. It may sound like a quirky system but it makes my journey as a writer much easier.

    I hope you enjoyed hearing a little about my writing schedule today. I'd also like to thank Kelly again for having me. Have a great weekend everyone!

    Kendra thought her life was her store; Chance thought his revolved around his addiction. What if they’re both wrong?

    Looking for a new start, Chance Daniels moves from hectic, big city living to a small town in South Central Pennsylvania. He decides opening his own music store on Main Street will help him beat the demons of his alcoholism. He discovers the beautiful business owner from across the street may be the lift he needs to beat his addiction. But little does he know that parts of his past unbeknownst to him are about to come to light. Chance receives strange objects in the mail and the woman he falls in love with is nearly run down by a crazed driver.
    Kendra Strafford, owner of Strafford’s Candle Creations, finds herself drawn to the tall, handsome man from Los Angeles after starting a standing weekday coffee date with him. She can’t help but fall in love with him, despite his addiction and the strange happenings that seem to surround him. Her own brush with death only draws her closer to Chance.
    Was her accident just an accident or was it part of a more devious scheme arising from Chance’s hidden past and will they overcome the bizarre occurrences besieging them to explore their developing love?

    Excerpt:
    "I hear someone is looking at the old Donaldson's building."
    Kendra peered out the front window of her candle shop, Strafford's Candle Creations, toward the brick façade of the adjacent building. She saw the local real estate agent and her good friend, Nancy Lewis, walking toward the old structure. The converted row house had once contained Donaldson's Hardware Store, which had been a fixture of Main Street, right across from Kendra's establishment.
    "Oh, yeah? I wonder what business someone would put in there," her assistant Deanna commented.
    Kendra frowned as she sipped the now lukewarm coffee then set the cup on the glass shelf beside her. "I don't know. Rumor has it it's someone new to the area. A guy looking to make a fresh start, from what Nancy told me. She said the buyer told her he needed a change of pace and a new locale. Why he'd end up in such a place as Jonerstown is beyond me. This area isn't known as a hotbed of business like York or Harrisburg."
    "I don't know. Jonerstown is a nice town. Perhaps its charm won him over."
    Kendra nibbled her lip — a habit of hers when deep in thought. "Maybe." A quick glance at her watch indicated it was nearly time to open the shop. "How's our merchandise looking? Do we need to restock anything?"
    "No, we're good. I took care of that chore last night while you were in the dungeon replenishing our inventory."
    Kendra stepped to the counter, which was tucked in the back corner of the sales floor. "Really? A dungeon? Where I come from it’s commonly called a basement. Hand me the duster. It's time to open and I haven't completed the dusting yet."
    Glancing around her shop, she surveyed the three rows of gleaming glass shelves filling two walls of the sales floor. Floor units graced the center of her shop, reflecting the brilliance of the morning sun against the ceiling of the store. The shelves were stocked with candles in a vast array of sizes, shapes, colors, and scents. She inhaled, marveling at the combination. Oh, how she loved the fruits of her labor. Every day her wares brought a feeling of warmth and pride.
    She strode to the storefront, unlocked the door, flipped the Closed sign to Open, and went about dusting the shelves while rearranging a candle or two along the way.
    "Wow. You've got to see the guy meeting up with Nancy."
    Kendra spun around, gazed out the window again, and was greeted by a pleasant surprise. The man shaking Nancy's hand stood about six feet tall at a guess. He was dressed in well-worn blue jeans and a black t-shirt that fit snugly over his arms and chest. "Hmm. At least we'll have some eye candy to stare at. He reminds me of a boxer with the trim, muscular build."
    "I like the spiky hair sticking out in every which direction. Too bad we couldn't see his face."
    Yeah, too bad. The body is killer.

    One Day Blog Blitz!-- SAINT SLOAN Release

    It's been awhile since I've posted. I haven't forgotten ya'll, just got busy.

    Have you ever heard of pitchmadness? Well, if not, it's a contest where you enter a 35 word pitch and the first 250 words of your novel. 'Slush readers' read the pitches and choose their favorites. Then the team captains pick 15 each (60 total). Those pitches are loaded on the websites and the participating agents get to 'bid' on the pitches (the rules will be up tomorrow).

    WELL, I'm SO Excited because my 4th novel (wow... I can't believe I've written FOUR!) was chosen to be on #thedreamteam by captain Brenda Drake! I'm OVER THE MOON! Honestly, I never thought it would go that far. I love it, but I didn't know if others would. Even if I don't get an agent, I had confidence now that this is a good book and has potential :) Fingers crossed!

    In other news, Thursday is the day I lose my mind ;) (just warning you ahead of time). I've decided to do a blog tour--- but not just ANY blog tour. A ONE DAY BLOG BLITZ.

    Team Aaron or Team Ray?

    In my new book, SAINT SLOAN, there is a bit of a 'triangle' between half-brothers Aaron and Ray over Sloan.

    At the release party last night, people were asked to choose a side (most of them had never read the book, and you don't have too to play :) ) One side OVERWHELMINGLY won... Wonder if your pick follows along with the trend...

    I'm going to post the 'inspirations' for the book characters and you can leave in the comments who you are rooting for to end up with Sloan's (kinda shattered) heart...

    First is Aaron Hunter... 19... works at a factory to support his brother, Ray, after their mom left them...

    Brandon Barash Picture

    (The oh so cute Brandon Barash from General Hospital is a good fit for Aaron... )

    THEN we have Aaron's half-brother, Ray... 17... high school student... quiet loner-type. Warns Sloan to stay away from Aaron--- buy why?

    (10 points if you know what show this is from... )

    So... you tell me... Team Aaron or Team Ray? Who are you rooting for?

    Saint Sloan by Kelly Martin

    When Sloan Bridges is seventeen years and three hundred, sixty-four days old, her dream of having a perfect birthday is shattered. Home alone after spending the afternoon working on a science project at the new boy’s house, Sloan is brutally attacked in her kitchen by a man she can’t recognize. The only clue she has to go on is what he whispers in her ear, “You deserve this.”
    The police have one suspect—Aaron Hunter, older brother of ‘the new boy’, who picked Sloan up a few nights before as she ran from a party. Adamant that he didn’t do it, Aaron begs Sloan to believe him. For her part, Sloan doesn’t know who to trust. She never saw her attacker’s face, and when she does picture it, it’s Aaron’s face she sees standing over her.
    Trying to move on is impossible with a former best friend who taunts her and gives her the moniker, “Saint Sloan”, an ex-boyfriend who doesn’t understand why she changed a few months before her attack, and Aaron’s brother, Ray, who makes Sloan smile but has a side she doesn’t understand.
    With her attacker ready to strike again, Sloan has to figure out who would hurt her and stop him before he finishes what he started.

    R-e-j-e-c-t-i-o-n-- How I Got Published by Sherry Gloag

    TWO days until SAINT SLOAN, my second novel, is released! EEEK! To celebrate, I've asked a lot of awesome authors to come over and share how they got published. I hope you are finding them informative, insightful, and encouraging. Don't EVER give up on your dreams!!! Sherry Gloag is here to talk about how she got published. She faced what we all face: r-e-j-e-c-t-i-o-n. I saw a sign today that said, you don't lose when you come in last, you lose when you quit. So don't quit, and you'll never lose...
    Here's Sherry...

    As I worked on my manuscript, I knew exactly which publisher I hoped would accept it. I spent hours, weeks; months studying their submission requirements. Not only for the line I was targeting but for some of the others too to highlight possible traps I might fall into. And the story took almost a year to write. It wasn’t my first full-length novel manuscript but it became my first published one.
    After my target publisher rejected my offering with some comments that hurt, I dug a hole and disappeared with my tattered pride, battered self-belief and the overwhelming need to indulge in the mother-and-father of a pity-party.
    Soon I began to feel angry. Not because of the rejection, well not entirely, but because I wondered how I could have got my research and efforts so wrong. And if that happened with this publisher what chance did I have of convincing another in the future?
    Then I got mad all over again. I would show everyone I could do this, including myself. For the next few months I cut and tweaked, wrote and rewrote, and then spent hours online looking for e-publishers. (Astraea Press didn’t exist at this time.) I chose The Wild Rose Press and submitted my story.
    It came back.
    But this time the wonderful editor included such an encouraging email, I contacted her directly and she gave me some fabulous advice, and a couple of recommendations of where to try next. I followed her advice, tried another line of The Wild Rose Press and was accepted. In October 2010 The Wild Rose Press published my first book, The Brat.

    ~~~
    I submitted my next book to the same publisher but it didn’t quite fit their remit, so I looked and was accepted elsewhere.
    During that time I had heard of and followed the launch and growth of Astraea Press, but was already involved in writing a novella for a Valentine anthology which was followed by a short story for yet another anthology. This was rejected, so I rewrote it and asked a friend if she would read it for me. I didn’t know at the time she was and still is an editor with Astraea Press. She liked it enough to suggest I extend the story, and let her see it. So I did, and then using her advice I submitted it to Astraea Press and From Now Until Forever was accepted. Since then Astraea Press has published another novella, His Chosen Bride, the 2nd in my Gasquet Princes series, and my current full-length Regency romantic suspense novel, Vidal’s Honor.
    Spending Time with Your Family-- Guest Post by Jennifer Gravely
    Hey, Kelly. Thanks for letting me stop by your blog. So excited to be here!
    My recent Astraea Press release Knight of the Dead features a four-year old as one of the main characters; thus I thought I’d share some fun activities for families to enjoy together. First, let me tell you a little bit about the book.
    Persephone Richards is in a pinch. With a wrecked car and bills stacking up, the income from her job at the daycare isn’t enough. Mark Lawrence needs a sitter for his little girl and Persephone is perfect for the job. What begins as an employment opportunity leads to romance. However, a secret Persephone hides threatens the happy ever after and puts the three of them in danger.
    Mark’s daughter Rose loves spending time with Miss Purr-So-Funny. Here are five activities they like to do together:
    1. Go to the park (Rose loves to swing high and to play on the banks of the creek)
    2. Visit the zoo (Rose adores animals, especially giraffes)
    3. Watch a movie (Sometimes Rose watches the same stories over and over again, acting out scenes)
    4. Play with a dog (Beagles are Rose’s favorite—she loves how they bellow in harmonious fashion)
    5. Read a good book (Chapter books featuring animals are always top on the list)
    Just for fun, let me know your favorite way to spend time as a family.
    Now, I’m going to share a passage featuring one of the above events. Persephone is a bit klutzy, and in an earlier scene she cut her finger helping Mark dice potatoes.
    From Chapter Thirteen…
    Rose grabbed Persephone’s hand, and they skipped to the
    other room. Mark followed a minute later.
    The three of them watched a cartoon version of a fairy tale.
    Rose tapped Persephone on the knee during a scene where the
    recently rescued damsel treats the knight’s wounds. “Is that what
    Daddy did for you?”
    Persephone nodded. “He did.”
    Rose clapped when the girl and the hero kissed at the end.
    “Miss Purr-So-Funny is like Jewel.” Rose yawned. “But you don’t
    like a knight, do you? I want you to like my daddy.”
    Persephone blushed. No question she liked Rose’s daddy. She
    stood. “I need to go so we all can get some sleep.”
    “Let me get my keys and our coats. Rosebud, I’ll carry you
    so you don’t need shoes.” He collected the items, and they all made
    their way to the car. Rose fell asleep as soon as they pulled out of
    the driveway. The low beams cut through the misty rain that fell
    across the tenth fairway.
    “Thank you for a wonderful dinner and evening,”
    Persephone said.
    “We’ll do it again tomorrow.” They turned away from the
    clubhouse and out onto the main road toward town.
    “Let me bring take-out. That way you won’t have a kitchen
    to clean. I feel bad about leaving you with the mess tonight.”
    “No problem. I’ll clean in the morning.” He yawned. “Lack
    of sleep is catching up with me.”
    “Me too.” She yawned in response.
    They listened to music for the next few miles before pulling
    in Jason’s driveway. The drizzle disappeared.
    “I’ll call you tomorrow.” He glanced behind her at the
    sleeping child in the backseat. “Is your finger okay?” He took her
    hand.
    Persephone’s heart raced. She smiled as she remembered
    what Rose said about the kissing.
    “What’s so funny?”
    “Rose. She wanted to know if you kissed my boo-boo.”
    “I will if it will help.” He brought her finger to his lips.
    Persephone caught her breath. “That helps.” She wanted to
    feel those soft lips against hers.
    “I’m glad,” he whispered and then leaned toward her.
    Thanks again, Kelly, for having me visit. J
