It doesn’t matter where you are in your writing career, the doubt monster will strike.
You read books by your favorite authors and decide your writing will never measure up.
While you’re in queryland, a friend lands an agent and you start questioning if that will ever be you.
While your book is out on submission, someone you know dances around and screams that she’s signed a 3-book deal with a major publisher, and you wonder if you’ll even get a one-book deal with anyone. Period.
You self publish your book and look longing at the list of NYT and USA Today bestsellers, many who are self published in your genre (NA contemporary romance authors, I’m looking at you). Heck, you do this if your book is traditionally published, too.
You start freaking out as doubts slither in as to whether or not you’ll meet your publisher’s deadline.
As you approach your book’s launch date, you go through emotional outbursts similar to those experienced during pregnancy.
You book does better than expected, but now you worry that you’ll be a one-hit wonder and your publisher and agent will dump you after the sequel turns out to be lame.
No matter where you are on your publishing career path, the doubt monster will strike. Don’t be afraid of him. Embrace him. Let him help you push your writing to a new level.
And while you’re at it, sign up for the monthly support group hosted by Alex Cavanaugh. The Insecure Writer’s Support Group meets the first Wednesday of each month (I’ll be joining it in the fall).
GIVEWAY NEWS: Adventures in YA and Children’s Publishing blog is doing a HUGE giveaway (well, several actually) for both readers and writers. The giveaways run this past Saturday and Sunday and next weekend. You’ll want to check it out!
So... There is a possibility that I have lost my mind. Seriously.
I have a bit of an annoucement--- well, it's not really an annoucement. It's more of a "I'm telling you so you can hold me accountable... " I have decided to participate in the 'National Novel Writing Month' (www.nanowrimo.org). That's right, friends. I have my plot. I have my characters. I have my setting. I'm writing a novel! In a month! While working full time! And have 3 kids! And a marriage! And a house! And 2 blogs... And Sunday School to Teach... Yes - I may have possibly lost my mind! BUT -- I'm committed to doing this. Writing a novel is something I've always wanted to do. It will more than likely never see the light of day -- but I never said that I had to sell it -- just write it lol. SO, this is where YOU come in! I'm still going to type up the "What is Love?" Bible Study, the Thankful Tuesday posts. Also, I'm going to blog about my adventure in writing the first draft of a novel in a month (hewboy!). However, I'm asking if I could have some of you fine people as guest posters :) I Heart Guest Posting. I think it is such a blessing to get to write something for someone else. I'd love to give others that opportunity.
It's a little bittersweet. About a month ago, I started contacting blogs to see if I could possibly add them to my CROSSING THE DEEP book blog tour. Every blog, except maybe three that I never expected to answer anyway, either said they would OR they would do facebook/twitter posts.
All in all, I had EIGHTEEN blog stops! *thud*
Thanks to all of the blogs, the people who have put up with me for the past 2 weeks on this book blitz, readers, people who comment, buyers of the book, etc. It has been a pretty special 2 weeks for me. Here is a list of the participating blogs. Please go over and show them some love :) Oct. 8th Mom's Tool Box (How the Bible in 90 Days program Influenced me to write the book)

First, I’d like to give a big thank you to Kelly for allowing me to host her blog! I truly appreciate her sharing her readers with me as I celebrate the release of my debut novel. Along the Way Home. How a Stinging Rejection Led to a Book Contract Signing with Astraea Press wasn't a decision I took lightly. At the time the contract was offered (on my birthday!!!!!) I had six agents and three editors (Medallion Press, Tor/Forge, and a small press) reviewing requested partials/fulls, an R&R offer from an agent, and an offer pending from another small press.
I happily walked away from all of the above because I believe so strongly in Astraea Press, and the niche they’ve carved out for themselves in an increasingly crowded marketplace.
What does that mean? Let me backtrack a bit and reveal something that happened in January of 2013 that perfectly illustrates why I chose to go with Astraea.
I was rejected by an agent who called my book lovely and sweet, raved about my writing and the storyline, but ended with the statement, “…let your characters engage in sex and describe the sex. As it stands, I’ll pass. Put the sex in and I’ll take another look.”
I assure you, I have thick skin when it comes to rejections. I’ve racked up my fair share since I began querying, and normally take them with a grain of salt (and chocolate—lots of chocolate), but this one really bothered me. I understand if a rejection is based upon my writing style, the likability of my characters, or a flaw in the storyline—but to be rejected solely on the basis that I choose NOT to include sex? That one didn't go over well.
So much so that I finally decided it was time to query the one publisher I’d had my eye on for months. A publisher that cares not only for the authors, but for the kind of work they attach their name to. I'd discovered Astraea Press before I started querying in September and really liked the stance the owner, Stephanie Taylor, took against unnecessary sex.
Bottom line, I’m proud to have my book published with Astraea Press!
I’d love to hear from you. What is a dream you never gave up on?

Ok, I SOOO wish I had of thought of that title a week ago lol TAMING THE TOYS. It has a certain ring to it...
Anyway, yet another week has come to a close and so has Quest #2. I know that at least one of you was busy this week finishing this cleaning quest. I hope more of you are on this (I will NOT say Journey ala The Bachelor... )... on this great, exciting adventure with me.
This week, we were supposed to tackle TOYS (dun dun dun).
My kids have toys in their rooms as well as in the living room. I'm going to tackle the bedroom later in the summer, so I only focused on the living room...
And it was a doozy...
Cover you eyes (but squint through your fingers... )
I KNOW!
THAT is the front door to my home. THE FRONT DOOR! SO yeah, no one could come inside that way because all of the toys were scattered around that area. We purge toys now and again, but apparently it needed it again. (Also, I realize the date is wrong on that picture... it does that everytime I change batteries and I forget to change it back).
So, Thursday evening, I enlisted the services of my 2 daughters ages 4 and 5 (the 10 month old was playing in her Jumperoo... have I mentioned she loves it ;) ) I would pick up a toy and ask, "Keep, Trash, Yard Sale?" And they would answer... I actually *may* have kept a few toys that they didn't want, but was sentimental. to me (First baby doll anyone!?!)
Anyway, it took us about an hour and a half, but this is what we came up with...
Tada!
I think it looks MUCH better. At least the door opens now lol. The jackolanterns are each filled with my 2 oldests' smaller toys.
So there it is.
Can't wait to see how the other quests go :)
Quest #2 COMPLETE! We whipped that Toy Dragon's Hinney!!! HUZZAH!
OK, take a deep breathe. Enjoy your success slaying the Terrible Toy Dragon... Savor the victory...
BECAUSE...
It's time for Quest #3.
This week, we are tackling Koraling Kitchen Klutter. Oh I can feel your excitement ;)
A few weeks ago, I posed about cleaning my cabinets etc. Well...
There are still some things that need to be completed in there. Some cabinets that need cleaning. A hutch that needs some help. SO, this is our Quest this week!
DON'T let that disorganized, clutter-hotel kitchen (And I'm SOO talking about myself) keep you back! WE CAN DO THIS!!!!!

Today has been a most excellent day. :) I took my littlest lady (Baby Everlee) for her 8 month pics at Sears. I do my pics a bit differently. It started with Baby Katie (who is now 5). I missed her 3 mo pics so I did 4 mo, 8, 12, etc. So anyway, the point is, Baby Everlee and I went on an adventure. Special thanks to Nana for keeping my other Ladies so I could focus on Baby Everlee.
When we got there, the photographer was very happy to see us bc it was 10 and she didn't have a costumer until 1 (yes, we were walk ins). She was so good with Everlee, however Diva Baby was having none of it. The photographer told her to smile, and she looked at her very seriously and shook her head no... and she meant it lol. Baby Everlee smiled I *think* once and that was the last picture. But it was still a good shoot. She did 4 different backgrounds, 2 different 'costume' changes for a total of 27 pictures. I ended up ordering 10 pages of pics for $65.17... I'm happy with that!
Had a mommy moment when I had to use the restroom VERY badly and was by myself with the baby, SO I had to undo my belt, to the other *things*, put my belt back on... all while holding Everlee (who was looking at me strangly... I'm sure she was thinking "Um Mama, why don't you just pee in your pants like me?). I have to admit, I kinda felt like SuperMom (Dun Dun Dun DA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Then Everlee and I went to Cracker Barrel. She'd never been there before so she had a great time. The thing about Cracker Barrel (if you don't know, it's a restaurant here in the south that has an 'old country store' where you look at things before you go in... I LOVE Cracker Barrel... but it can be really really loud) is that my other kids hate it. The first time Katie when she threw up all over the place... to be fair she was 9 days old and had acid reflux, but never mind that... she hated it even after that. Chloe's not a fan of it either. So I was kinda scared to take Everlee, but I thought what the heck? SO we went, and if you have kids.. notice something...
People are VERY nice to you in stores...
People Ooo and ahhh when they see you out at Wal-mart with your baby...
People will make over your kids at church...
But you take your small kids to a restaurant, it's like you have the plague lol
They will sit you away from everyone and no one will look your direction ("Honey, don't look at them! The baby might cry and it will RUIN our meal." lol lol) I don't mind. After 3 kids, I'm used to it... however, what they dont' know is that I PREFER to be away from things, and so do my kids, so it's win win.
Everlee and I weren't really sat away from people... in fact we were at table 1. Right close to the exit (probably thought I might need to run lol)
Anyway, the waiter and I got into a great discussion about kids... he was really nice. His name was Greg. He was 30 and he and his wife are discussing when to have kids. I've noticed something else, too, waiters don't talk to me that much when I'm with my dh.
I left him a $6 tip... he was nice...
Greg the waiter asked me if I was expecting another person and I said, "Nope, just me." and his eyes nearly bugged out of his head. He told me I had my hands full and I said, "Heck, I have 2 more at home. This is a vacation." lol... and then that when he started in on talking about kids. Did I mention he was nice? Sure, it was all probably for a good tip, but I don't care. Niceness will get you things in my book! :)
We got home at around 1 and got the other ladies (who were very happy to see us).
It's been a most excellent day and I'm so happy and thankful for all of my kids... even if I don't seem like it sometimes. I love them all very very much!!! Tomorrow is shot day for Chloe and Everlee... Chloe is very excited... honestly. She loves the doctor because it's the only time she gets lollypops ;)
So, I wrote this on the mommy board and a few people requested that I put it on here. So here ya go... in all it's glory ;)
My Adventures in Co-sleeping...
SO, most of you know that I'm probaby the least crunchy person on this board. I have nothing against crunchiness... In fact, I watch your yt videos. I lurk in the cloth diapering. I secretly wish I bfed. I want to wear Everlee. And part of me really wishes I had of co-slept. All that said, OBVIOUSLY, I'm not doing any of that, and that's ok. However, last night, I just KNEW that I was going to have my chance to be at least a tad bit crunchy... on the cusp of granola as it were...
Everlee was sick with allergies... which *I* knew but someone was freaking out (for some reason). Anyway, long story short, when it was time to go to bed, I was a bit panicky. Her room is right next to mine. I can hear her breathing sometimes... however, she's my baby, and she was sick and if anything had of happened to her while she was asleep, I would have never forgiven myself... SOOOOOOOOOO I had the bright idea that I was going to co-sleep.
BRILLIANT!
*I thought*
I'll be a 'good' Mama! For once, I'll do SOMETHING 'AP'. For ONE night at least, I'll be *that* mom... those were my thoughts. Yes, I was going to be awesome. Mom of the Year.
SO, Everlee was sleeping soundly in her bed. I went in, gently got her out of her bed, and took her into the room w/me. We laid down and I put her on my chest... so I could feel her breathing. See, what an AWESOME Mother I was!!!! I felt so warm and so snug... and then...
Everlee.
Sweet Everlee with her big matted together eyes from allergies looked up at me and just stared like I was the craziest person ever. I smiled and told her that it was ok. That Mama was being good. That I was going to take care of her and make her feel better.
She wasn't buying it.
She fussed.
She tried to get away.
I tried different ways to hold her comfortably.
She wasn't amused.
Finally, she looked up at me. Warm from a fever. Eyes still matted. Opened her mouth and tried to cry... but where she was sick barely a whisper came out. Soundless tears. It was honestly the saddest sight ever.
I had to lick my wounds.
So, I picked poor, sick Everlee up. Gave her a kiss. Put her back into her crib in her room (where she immediatly went back to sleep... that crazy alien wearing her Mama's face had finally put here where she belonged)
I went to my room alone. Set my clock for 1 am and checked on her every 2 hours....

Chapter One “I’m so glad he’s marrying someone else,” whispered Lucy, watching the groom shuffle nerv-ously from one foot to the other at the top of the aisle. “It could have been you up there,” replied Fiona. “How many times did Marcus ask you to marry him?” “Three,” Lucy replied, shifting position for the fourth time in as many minutes. Why did church pews have to be so uncomfortable? “The first time when we were five, then again at twenty and finally,” she paused, reliving the moment in her head, “eight months ago.” “Well,” Fiona said, as the organ struck up, filling the cold but pretty church with overly loud mu-sic, “it looks as though you’re safe from any more proposals, because I think the bride has just arrived.” Amelie Marchant made her way slowly down the aisle, blonde hair in an elegant chignon, de-signer dress looking a million dollars. Beneath her thin veil it was clear she was smiling, no doubt savouring each precious second of being the focus of everyone’s attention, yet keeping her own attention firmly fixed on Marcus, who was awaiting her arrival at the altar. Fiona nodded in approval. “She looks gorgeous. Her dress is exquisite.” She nudged Lucy. “Doesn’t the little bridesmaid look sweet in deep pink?” “Yes, she’s Amelie’s niece apparently.” Lucy let a small sigh of contentment slip from her lips as Amelie reached the altar and stood close to Marcus. Finally she, Lucy Stokes, was going to be free of Marcus Brandon. He was marrying someone else, hallelujah! She would, at long last, be able to live her life exactly the way she wanted to. The whole reason she was here today was to witness the ceremony for herself. To know it was for real. Okay, so she and Marcus had been childhood sweethearts. They’d played at the whole boy-friend-girlfriend thing on and off, sometimes quite successfully, for well over fifteen years. When she’d reached her twenties Lucy had sensed they didn’t have a future together, and she’d been trying to get Marcus to realise the fact ever since. When she’d broken it off with him for the last time, to say he hadn’t taken kindly to the idea they were no longer an item was a major understatement. Over time she’d grown used to his persistent phone calls, the fact he often just popped round to see her and casually suggested, if they were both at a loose end, they might go for a drink or to the pictures. Even when she’d plucked up the courage to attempt to date other people, it had been a complete disaster. Friadon was a small town and Marcus seemed to know every detail of where she went, when and with whom. On more than one occasion he’d tried to talk her out of going on a date, and she suspected, but couldn’t prove, he’d persuaded at least one of her dates to stay well away from her, causing her to be stood up, all alone in the heavy rain, outside the local cinema. Six months after they’d split up, in a completely misguided attempt to woo her back, he’d gotten down on one knee and proposed to her for the third time at the travel agency where she worked. Armed with a huge bouquet of red roses and a bottle of champagne he’d asked her to marry him one last time. It had been in front of several customers too; Lucy had been pink with embarrass-ment. When, riddled with guilt, she’d gently declined his offer yet again, he’d gone off and met Amelie. Eight months later here the two of them were standing at the altar about to become man and wife. Realising the ceremony was already well under way and she’d missed the first bit through not paying attention, Lucy tried to focus on what was being said, forcing the memories of Marcus from her mind. Yes, they’d enjoyed some fun times over the years, and she had to admit there had been occasions when they’d been completely great together, but it was all in the past now. His future lay with Amelie. Clearing his throat the vicar glanced nervously towards the congregation and asked, “Does any-one here object to the marriage of Amelie Marchant and Marcus Brandon? If so, speak now or forever hold... ” “I object.” The words were barely audible but Lucy heard them and fear shivered up her spine. The vicar, looking as though his worse fears were being realised, glanced around anxiously, un-sure what to do or say next. “I object!” This time the voice was louder. The vicar grew red-faced and flustered. “I’m sorry, sir, did you say you object?” The bridegroom nodded solemnly. “Yes, I’m afraid I did.” Those in the first few rows of the church heard the faintest of whimpers escape from beneath the bride’s veil and her knees appeared to buckle just a little. Fixing a stern gaze upon the unwilling groom the vicar muttered, “Why exactly do you object, Mr. Brandon?” Marcus addressed the packed congregation, his eyes scanning the rows, seeming to search for someone. Then in a loud, clear voice he announced, “I object because I’m still in love with an-other woman!” Raising his right hand he pointed to an area, three pews back on the right, just in front of a stone pillar. “Lucy, my love, will you ever take me back?” There was collective gasp from the congregation; the bride fainted on the spot, sinking to the floor to be quickly swallowed up in a cloud of ivory silk and lace. Lucy, covered in embarrass-ment from head to foot, used her generously proportioned purple feather hat to try to hide her face, clasped her matching purple purse to her chest and ran from the church as fast as her kitten heels would carry her. **** “Poor woman. Imagine being left at the altar.” Fiona licked her lips and placed her fork back on the now empty plate, having demolished a generous portion of blueberry cheesecake. “It’s the kind of thing you never recover from, surely.” “I know, I know, and I’m mortified everybody thinks I was in some way to blame.” Lucy sighed and searched in her handbag for a tissue. “I tried to call Amelie afterwards to explain there was nothing going on between me and Marcus, but her mum slammed the phone down on me. Eve-ryone hates me and I haven’t even done anything wrong.” “So, where is Marcus now then?” “He flew out to Portugal yesterday after the wedding to stay with his sister and her family. He rang me from the airport and asked if I’d fly out to join him, can you believe it?” Lucy shook her head in despair. “What do I have to do for him to get the message?” “Well, he’s obviously still crazy about you.” Fiona sighed and then pinched the uneaten biscotti from the side of Lucy’s cup and saucer. “In some ways it’s rather romantic.” “Fi! It’s not and you know it! You’ve known me since school, and you know how he’s been driving me crazy for years! You, of all people, should understand!” Lucy replied, trying to re-trieve the stolen biscotti from Fiona. “I want some freedom from him. I want a life. I want to be able to try to find my Mr. Perfect.” Fiona shook her head despairingly. “Not Mr. Perfect again. Don’t tell me — the man of your dreams needs to be,” she started to count on her fingers, “One, he needs to be fabulously wealthy. Two, he needs to be drop dead gorgeous. Three, kind and loving, attentive and thought-ful. Four, intelligent and successful. Five…” Lucy held her hand up in protest. “Well, a girl needs to aim high.” “I understand about you and Marcus. He’s not the man for you, but I’m afraid you’re not being realistic in the male wish list department. Firstly, you swap and change your mind about things all the while, and secondly, you know Mr. Perfect doesn’t even exist,” Fiona said, with a regretful smile. “I’m sure we all wish he did, but he doesn’t. Never has.” Looking like a child who’d just been told Santa Claus wasn’t real, Lucy replied, “Okay for you to say. You’ve found your soulmate and are heading for the Friadon wedding of the year in a couple of weeks.” “Yes, this is true.” Fiona nodded, a blissful smile appearing on her face. “But don’t forget I was realistic. I know Luke’s the one for me. I accept he’s not Mr. Perfect. He doesn’t shower me with roses or gifts, he goes down to the pub with his mates to watch the football far too often, and he’s not made of money. Oh, and he hates shopping!” Lucy shook her head, pretending to disapprove. “And yet you still love him!” “Yes, I do.” Fiona snapped the biscotti in half and handed one piece to Lucy. “Didn’t you ever love Marcus?” “No. Well, maybe I thought I did when I was younger. We were great together for a while.” She sighed, stirring her coffee absentmindedly. “I suppose I’ve never had much chance to date other guys, to experience life. That’s part of the problem. Marcus always wanted us to go absolutely everywhere together when we were dating.” “I don’t know how you’ve managed. To reach the ripe old age of twenty three, and you can probably count the number of boyfriends you’ve had on three fingers.” Lucy buried her head in her hands, a curtain of straight blonde hair falling forward to hide her face. “I know. It’s crazy. And now I’m hated by pretty much every female within a ten mile ra-dius because they think I’m a trollop and I’ve been carrying on with Marcus whilst he’s been en-gaged. I’m completely innocent in all of this, yet I’m the one getting bad-mouthed.” “They’ll get over it.” Pausing for dramatic effect, Fiona added, “It’ll just probably take a long while. In the meantime you’ll have to get used to being thought of as a wanton woman.” Patting her hand reassuringly, she said, “Anyway, I’m still your friend.” “Great, thanks,” muttered Lucy, head still in her hands. “Sometimes I just feel this overwhelming desire to move away from here, to get myself a new life.” “Well, do it then. For goodness sake you’ve been whinging on about it enough for the last few years.” Fiona popped the biscotti into her mouth. “Think about it. What’s stopping you from leaving Friadon anyway? Well, apart from my impending wedding of course.” Warming to her topic she said, “It would do you good to get away from this small town mentali-ty. You should have done it years ago. Go off and explore, find out what you want from your life. You’ve never had a chance to date properly without Marcus peering over your shoulder. It must have been awkward.” “It was.” Lucy shrugged, staring at a large crumb of biscotti on the table. As she had a good idea how infrequently the table tops were cleaned in this café, she resisted the strong urge to scoop the crumb up and lick it from her finger. “Anyway, at my age, shouldn’t I have my life all mapped out by now? You know, what I want from men, work, the whole caboodle.” Shaking her head Fiona reached for the last of her coffee. “Nah, it’s just a popular myth. Gener-ally things just happen, and they’re probably not what you were planning but they usually kind of work out for the best in the end.” Looking at Lucy, she said, “Remember how you used to complain about how boring Marcus was? Saying how you’d never been in a relationship where you’d been totally swept off your feet, how you wanted to find a man you could be completely crazy about for the rest of your life? Always going on about how you wanted to find your Mr. Perfect, the love of your life?” Lucy pushed a lock of hair behind her right ear, frowning. “And your point is?” “Go find the man for you, have your adventure, enjoy yourself,” Fiona added encouragingly. “All of the hearts and roses stuff, the handsome looks and pots of money business we all, at some point, crave. Doesn’t matter. They’re not the real recipe for happiness in a relationship.” As Lucy’s face took on a not-this-lecture-again look, Fiona said, “You’ll see, I know you will. You just need to find the right man first.” **** Business had been slower than usual at the Price Right Travel Agency where Lucy worked. “Isn’t it boring when nobody comes into the agency?” She sighed as she deftly slid a pair of scis-sors through some plastic wrapping on a pile of holiday brochures proclaiming Turkey to be ‘paradise in the sun’. Her boss Melanie glanced up from her computer with an irritated expression on her pixie-like face. “I imagine we’re being boycotted thanks to your little shenanigans with Marcus.” Trying to wedge some brochures with a picture of a gorgeous sun-drenched Turkish beach on the front onto the shelving, Lucy said, “For the tenth time, Mel, I didn’t do anything. What do I have to say for people to believe me?” Mel shook her head. “I’m not here to judge your love life but when it starts to affect my busi-ness…” she paused, choosing her words carefully. “For starters Marcus was one of our best cus-tomers. He even booked his honeymoon here. Goodness knows what will happen there. Nobody has asked about the chance of a refund yet. What with Marcus paying for it and then jetting off to Portugal straight after the non-wedding, he hasn’t had a chance. I expect he’ll be in to try to sort it all out when he gets back.” “He’ll lose his money. I’m pretty sure walking out on your wedding isn’t covered under his in-surance,” said Lucy with a grimace, feeling guilty about how Marcus and Amelie wouldn’t get to enjoy the five star hotel he’d chosen on a gorgeous stretch of beach on Cyprus. If she remem-bered rightly the place had three restaurants, five swimming pools, a spa and a gym. Everything you could wish for. She’d helped him to choose the place. Now she was the reason he wouldn’t be going there. “Perhaps it would be best if you took a bit of a sabbatical. Have you thought about it at all?” Mel asked with more than a hint of encouragement in her voice. “Sabbatical?” Lucy queried, the brochures in her hand slipping to the floor. “Not a polite way of saying I’m fired is it?” “Of course not. I’ll hold your job open for you. Just consider it an opportunity to take a few weeks off to go and have yourself a bit of fun. Hopefully by the time you return, all the gossips will have moved on to someone else and the next Friadon scandal.” “You’re serious aren’t you?” Lucy asked, sitting down on several bundles of as-yet unopened brochures. “Definitely. I have this friend who works for a small TV production company. They’re doing some sort of programme about love and one of the girls has had to pull out at the last moment for family reasons. They need a replacement right away and the filming is supposed to start in two days. Craig, my friend, doesn’t want to have to go through all the audition info again to choose someone else. I bet you’d be ideal.” Sceptically Lucy asked, “What sort of love programme? It’s not something tacky is it?” “No, no,” Mel answered, tapping away at her computer keyboard. “I think the idea is for three girls and one boy to spend two weeks together at some glam location. It’s properly organised and supervised. Each of you would get to go on your dream type of dates. It’s all about the psycholo-gy of finding the love of your life.” Lucy got to her feet, then swayed unsteadily as her sandals slipped across several of the glossy holiday brochures scattered about the floor where she’d dropped them minutes earlier. Stooping to gather up the brochures before a customer (should one of them ever appear) broke their ankle on them and sued the agency, Lucy contemplated Mel’s suggestion. “So it would all be quite tasteful then?” “I should imagine so. I think they’ll be having a psychologist on hand too, so after each date you can talk about how you think things went. There’s a complete relationship analysis service avail-able so you can learn about yourself, men, and your attitude towards dating. Sounds ideal for you.” Realising she’d been holding her breath for a few seconds, Lucy let it out in a long sigh. “Okay, I might be interested. Shall I call this Craig or will you?”

Excerpt from The Lance Temptation (Book One of The Edgemont Collection):
Farah carried her tray with its plate of green beans as if it were the royal jewels. She sashayed toward our regular table in the corner of the cafeteria, her hips lightly brushing the backs of the entire high school football team who’d already grabbed the table in the nearest the food. The catcalls began immediately. “Hot stuff,” one player yelled, and then whistled. With practiced innocence, Farah paused, and turned to face the guys. She rolled her green eyes and shook her head, feigning annoyance. A smile played on her lips. Then she fluttered her thick lashes and continued on, skirting her way to our table in the back. Oh yeah, she’s a master at everything I’m not. All Farah has to do is show up and the boys follow, frolicking like puppies around a bone. So, shameful as it sounds—I made it my business to become her friend, even if it meant dropping everyone in my tight circle. I was done being the boring, straight A girl. I wanted the hot guys to drool around me for once, and I figured the connection couldn’t hurt. Watch and learn, Farah had said. Right. I stood with my tuna sandwich stuffed inside my crumpled lunch sack, sighed heavily and followed her, trying not to let my shoes clack out my progress. Nobody’s eyes followed my every move. Well, there’s a surprise. I slid onto the bench across from her. It was Monday—the only day Farah’s halfway civilized because she’s tired from the weekend—and we were eating lunch together as usual. Farah opened her milk carton, and took a drink. She tipped her head, letting her thick red hair cascade down her back. The loose curls nearly touched her waist. Farah’s well aware how flat-out gorgeous she is, and she quickly glanced around to see who might be watching. The table of girls to the side of us stared at her. When they spotted me looking at them, they huddled together in one big gossip head. Farah saw them laughing, pointing, and whispering. Her expression hardened. “What a bunch of wannabe’s.” “They’re jealous,” I said. Farah leaned across the end of our table toward them. “Talk about me all you want, you sad groupies.” Their heads jerked apart and each one of them glared at her. Farah scowled, and then turned her attention back to me. I heard a yelp behind me, and someone hollered, “You’re disgusting!” A burst of raucous laughter filled the air. I could see Farah watching the whole scene over my shoulder. Wide-eyed, she jumped from her seat and flew to a table of freshmen girls. I swirled around to observe. Farah lunged across their strewn trays and stuck her face against a shocked girl’s nose. “Leave her alone! Do it again, and you’ll deal with me.” Her harsh voice echoed across the cafeteria. The freshmen girls were shocked into silence, but their lips fairly curled into snarls. A choked sniffle came from a girl cowering at the end of the table. Macaroni was splattered all over her uniform. Farah stood up to her full height, her cheeks blotched red. She regarded the sniveling girl. “You okay?” There was no answer. “Want help cleaning up?” The girl shook her head, picked up a napkin, and started wiping at her shirt. Farah squared her shoulders and returned to our table. I stared at her. “What was that?” “Bullies. I hate them. And where are the lunch monitors, anyway?” She picked up her fork and took a bite of green beans. “You know, sometimes you’re actually nice.” Farah grimaced. “Don’t let it get around.” I laughed and picked up my sandwich. Right then a tender feeling of protectiveness toward Farah washed over me. And that’s when he descended upon our table. The New Guy. The one I’d secretly been panting after since he transferred to our school two weeks earlier.
Interview with Emili Jones, the main character of The Lance Temptation:
Give us a few brief facts about yourself. My name is Emili Jones. I’m sixteen years old and a sophomore at Bates Academy.
Is Bates a private school? Yes. I’ve gone there forever. All my friends are there.
Who’s your best friend? Right now, my best friend is Farah Menins. She’s gorgeous and all the guys like her.
And how about you? Are you popular with the guys? Not so much. I figured if I hung out with Farah, it might help me get more popular.
Did it work? I managed to snag one guy all on my own. His name is Marc and he’s really nice. You know, a sweet guy. But there’s this new guy at school named Lance, and I start sweating the minute I look at him. He’s fine. But I don’t think he’d ever look twice at me.
What’s your favorite thing to do? I make perfume. It can get kind of spendy though.
What’s the stupidest thing you’ve ever done? Is it okay if I don’t really answer that? It’s embarrassing and I’m still mad at myself. I will say this—it had to do with Marc.
What do you wish you could do over? Wow. There are a couple major things. I dumped my friend Jeannie, and sometimes I regret it. Especially because of the reason why I dumped her. The other thing is the same as the last question you asked. It’s about Marc.
What’s hardest about being a teen in today’s world? The pressure on you to be hot and smart and beautiful and popular. It’s impossible. Who could live up to that? Well, maybe Farah. But the pressure makes you do stupid things. Even when you try not to be an idiot, you end up doing things you know you shouldn’t.
What are your future plans? Hmmm, I’m only a sophomore so I’m not sure. I want to graduate from Bates and go to university. I’m worried, though, because something’s going on with my dad. He has some big announcement, and I can tell by the look on his face I’m not going to like it.
I hope the announcement isn’t too awful. It was nice talking with you today, Emili. All of us can read about your story in The Lance Temptation, correct. Yep. Thanks for talking with me. It was nice to be here.

CROSSING THE DEEP has gotten some awesome reviews :) Here are some of them: B.K (amazon comments) I purchased this book on a Friday night and had finished it by Saturday night. I tried to put it down and get things done (I have 3 kids!) but I just couldn't. The story line and great characters kept sucking me back in.
Although I am a firm believer in God, I haven't had much interest Christian fiction myself, but this was a great book overall. The author does a very nice job of building believable and likeable characters. The plot starts rolling right away and you won't get bored or hit any lulls in this story.
You will walk away from this story still thinking about the characters days later.
Great story, you won't be disappointed you purchased this one!
C.S (Goodreads Review) Went into this book with a preconceived notion that it would be ho-hum as I'm not a fan of many books that involve religion or prayer. But I was so pleasantly surprised and quickly fell in love with Rachel and Asher and Rachel's faith gave me something to think about. Wonderfully written and so enjoyable and NOT predictable. Hoping there is going to be a follow up and it becomes a series. Well done!
B.H. (amazon comments) Kelly Martin is an amazing author! She really sets the bar high for her first novel. I really enjoyed reading this book. The descriptions of the Smokies alone make you feel like you are right there with the characters. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from her!
S. (amazon comments) Wow! A great read for teens or adults. Wonderfully written. From a great start to a fantastic finish. I can't wait for her next book.
C. (amazon comments) Once I started this book I simply could not put it down! Crossing the Deep keeps you on the edge of your seat. Crossing the Deep is a thought provoking young adult Christian fiction story that tells about a church youth group's hiking trip to the Smoky Mountains and obstacles that they have to overcome in order to make it safely back home. Definitely a great read! W.K (amazon comments) The cover alone captures your attention & leads you to a great story written by a new up and coming author. A refreshing young adult Christian novel sure to please! R (amazon comments) If you enjoy fiction (and even if fiction isn't really you're thing) you'll be entertained by this young adult novel. I would certainly recommend it for any lover of a good action/adventure story. B. (amazon comments) Bought this book today and cannot put it down! I will be finished by tomorrow and I am so excited as each new chapter and character develops! M.W (amazon comments) What a great book from a first time author! I enjoyed it so much. I highly recommend that all of you read this! S.T. (author page post)
I started Crossing the Deep yesterday and couldn't put it down! I stayed up late to finish it. Excellent book!
J. T (on a blog tour comments section) ... Had me crying in several spots. It points out one very important but little known fact; PASTORS DON'T HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS!!
B.G. (on a blog tour comment section) WOW! I love that you started on a spiritual quest to read the Bible and ended as a published author! I love the "blurb" and can't wait to buy the book! Have you read the book people are calling 'not your typical' Christian novel? If you have, I'd love to hear from you! If you haven't, please go to Amazon and read the first 3 chapters to see if it is up your alley. I think you'll enjoy it. BUY LINKS:Amazon Barnes and Noble Astraea Press
Today, I'm linked with Sweet Saturday Samples to give you a sample of my new book, CROSSING THE DEEP. It is a young adult book for all ages (from 13 to 30 to 90). Here is a little nugget to whet your whistle:
WARNING: There are some spoilers in this sample...
Asher held her up as they took off down the trail toward what they hoped was the way home. His mind kept going back to Rachel’s prayer and her faith. He wished he had her faith in something… anything. But he didn’t think he had it in him.
“Do you know the first thing I’m going to do when I get back?” she asked, bringing him back to reality.
“I don’t know. Go to church and do some sort of prayer ritual?”
“Some sort of prayer ritual?” She laughed. Her smile lit up her face, making Asher happy. She was getting to him, and he seemed pretty powerless to stop it.
“Well, it seemed like something you’d do.”
“Maybe, and I guess I should, but right now all I want to do is go to Buffalo Bob’s and eat a monster burger.”
“Really? ‘Cause I’ve been to Buffalo Bob’s and the monster burger is bigger than your head.”
“Then it will be just about the right size.” She grinned at him, her eyes bright.
For the first time, Asher saw her playful side, and he liked it. It suited her. Upset, sad, angry didn’t look good on her — this did. He wished she would be playful all the time. “I’d pay to see that.”
“It’s a date then,” she said. The shock in her eyes told him she hadn’t meant to let that slip. “Um… I mean, that was stupid…”
“A date would be nice.” He grinned, despite himself. Forget the dump-‐‑her-‐‑on-‐‑the-‐‑mountain plan. He cared too much about her to do that, even if he hadn’t shown it that much. Things would be complicated when they got back home, but right then, he needed something to look forward to. A date with Rachel fit the bill.
“A date?”
“Yeah, why is that so hard to believe? We’re technically on a date right now.” He winked at her just to watch her blush. Yep, this girl was fun. “But I don’t think Buffalo Bob’s would be a great place for a second date. I’m thinking of something fancier. The Stockyard.”
“The steakhouse?”
“One and the same. I want a big ole steak and giant baked potato.”
“You are such a man.” She laughed and rolled her eyes.
“Good of you to notice.”
****
She didn’t know what she should say to that. This all felt weird. It was as if she was in the middle of one of those dreams that felt real, but she’d wake up in her bed alone in the middle of the night — never on this trip, never lost and hurt, never made a date with Asher.
Even if this wasn’t a dream, and she was in fact hobbling through the woods, at least she knew that the end neared. By nightfall, she’d be in a nice, warm hotel room, retelling her adventure to all of her friends, save maybe the kissing part. She didn’t know how her mom would take that part.
She saw the sign before he did. “There’s Harrison’s Trail.”
“Yep, in all its glory. Looks like we made it. Again.”
“At least we know where we are, relatively speaking anyway.”
“We know we are on a trail, but we have no idea where that trail leads,” he reminded her.
“It leads this way,” she smiled, pointing out in front of them.
“That’s hilarious,” he deadpanned, causing her to snicker. She didn’t know why she was so giddy. Exhaustion maybe? Hunger?
Asher tightened his hold on her waist, not much, but enough for her to notice. “Civilization, here we come,” he said and off they went.
It was different seeing new scenery, even if the new scenery looked like the old for all intents and purposes. The woods still looked like woods, but she’d grown so accustomed to the ones she’d been in that she could tell the difference. With every step, their temporary cemetery home became farther and farther away. They were doing this. No turning back now.
****
When they had walked about two long hours with few rest breaks, Asher heard something low in the distance.
“What is that?” Rachel asked.
He stopped and listened. It was a faint sound, a rumbling maybe? It sounded far away, but he hoped it wasn’t what he thought it was.
“Is that water?”
His jaw clenched when she said that, remembering the overflowing creek that had cut off Deep Creek Trail. “I hope not. Come on.” He started walking again, taking her with him.
As they walked, the sound got louder. It made Asher’s stomach churn. About twenty minutes later, he saw what made the roaring sound. Harrison’s Trail led past a huge waterfall. The falls appeared to be about twenty feet from top to bottom, and it spilled through the rocky terrain down the mountain.
“It’s beautiful,” Rachel said, looking at it in awe.
Asher wasn’t as impressed. “It’s blocking the path.”
Well, friends. I made it home from my adventure in one piece. It was touch and go for a while. It's really NOT fun being lost in Nashville. I was caught alternating between cursing like a sailor and praying like a saint.. SO I decided that wasn't doing any good, and cut out the cursing. And a miracle happened! I was supposed to be looking for 'Frankin Pike'. I got turned around somehow and ended up back on the interstate (nice!). Anyway, I was freaking out, turned on the first road I saw because I was going to turn back at the redlight at the top of the ramp... ONLY the ramp didn't stop at the redlight. It just kept on going. SO (freaking more and praying like the dickens), I went on and decided to turn around again at the next road to take me back to the road I missed, to take me back to the interstate, to take me back to the road I made the wrong turn on (I know, makes a LOT of sense lOL). Anyway, as I started to turn I looked up and saw the road sign 'Franklin Pike'. I almost cried from happiness. And turns out it was the right road and the right direction!! I found the place easily after that. I could have kissed the ground when I got there though LOL.
Now, the meeting was an autism training for SPED teachers. It was interesting... after the first hour when I couldn't stop looking at other people's hair color and wondering how ugly mine really was. Finally I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror, decided I didn't look half bad, and went back. I focused the rest of the time.
The end of the day was very interesting... since I had absolutely no idea how to get home. But I love trying to get home from Nashville without directions. This is going to sound corny probably, but it makes me think of my Daddy and smile. My Daddy didn't talk a lot, but he did give good advise. One of those was that when getting home from anywhere, always go toward Knoxville. I kept thinking that over and over, which would have been wonderful, if the first crossroads I came too weren't "Nashville" and "Huntsville". I prayed, chose Nashville (deciding I'd rather stay in Nashville that go all the way to Huntsville. It turned out to be the right way and after getting off of several interstates (I-65, 24, 440, and 40), I ended up home... finally. It was actually really fun coming home. Going, not so much.
**I think I've mentioned this before, but I don't feel nearly as confident or attractive with this new hair. I feel awkward and self conscious... very self conscious. I"m going to try to dull it. I can't take it much longer.
Ok, off to relax with the family. Watch some Dancing with the Stars (I'm rooting for the Olympic man to go this week). It's not wrong to have a SMALL crush on an 18 year old is it... Cody Linley is adorable! He's definitely my favorite to watch this season. Makes me feel like a dirty old woman LOL
Yes-- I may have possibly lost my mind! BUT-- I'm committed to doing this. Writing a novel is something I've always wanted to do. It will more than likely never see the light of day-- but I never said that I had to sell it-- just write it lol. If you are interested, please send me an email at ohthatmomagain [at] yahoo [dot] com.
I'd also appreciate your prayers as I go toward this goal. It will NOT be easy. But neither was the Bible in 90 days--- and this one is just a month ;) Much love, Kelly

Week 3: Are you a Scrooge McDuck? Verse we are studying: 1 Corinthians 13:2If I had the gift of prophecy and if I understood all of God's secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn't love others, I would be nothing.
I hope this week finds you excited about learning more about 'What is Love?" I know I am :) I wanted to start off by saying that I hope this Bible Study/Series is helping you in your life. I hope you are doing your verses either with the SOAP method or writing them in your own words, and I pray that you are getting something new out of them. I know that 12 weeks is a big commitment-- but you can do it :) We will do it together. It will be an adventure (Huzzah! :) ) Ok, lets get excited and dive right in. Last week, we learned that if we don't love others... and don't have passion in what we are talking about-- we end up sounding like clashing cymbals to everyone around us-- or Charlie Brown's teacher. Basically we would be just blowing non-sense hot air. And lets face it, people will see right thought it. So the reverse of that is to be passionate about talking about God. Let everyone know that talking about Him isn't a chore-- it's an honor. This week goes along with that theme. Notebook Question: If you haven't written this week's verse in your own words, go ahead and do that now. I think it is easier to understand things if you re-word them in your 'language'. Here is what it means to me: "If I were the smartest person in the world, knew God's plans, had more faith that anyone, and could predict the future, but I didn't love anyone else-- it wouldn't mean a hill of beans." Basically, even if you had 'it all', and didn't love people... it wouldn't matter. It would be nothing. Lets look a bit to see what that phrase means : "It would be nothing." I think that it means 2 things: 1. I could be the richest, most gifted, highest quality speaker in the world. Could spout facts without hindrance and knew everything about everything-- but if I didn't have love in my heart, then I'm the lowest of the low. All of my rewards would be here on Earth and nothing would be saved for me in Heaven. Riches, power, and "smarts" only gives you things on Earth, but love gives you everything in Heaven-- forever. God doesn't care if you are smart, not smart, or lacking basic common sense-- all He cares about is that you love Him, follow Him, and love others. He will USE your talents to do His will, but not everyone has the same ones. Not everyone will be the 'brains of the bunch'-- but God will use what you DO have. 2. If you had a room full of money in your home (think Scrooge McDuck)-- if the bills in the room were no less than hundreds and they were filling the room to the ceiling. Every day you went into the room to admire the stacks of money, and every night you locked the door so no one could steal it--- BUT you had no friends, no love, no life beyond work and bringing money home to your secret room, it wouldn't mean anything. Face it, money is just paper (as much as it pains me to say lol). It's just paper.. the same as notebook paper. If you have a room of it, then you have a room full of paper. God blesses us with money to bless others-- not so we can hoard it. And like they say, "you can't take it with you." Now, we need to go back to the beginning of the verse: *If I had the gift of prophecy... but didn't love others, I would be nothing. What exactly is the 'gift of prophecy'? Prophesying is more than predicting the future (which is part of it really, but not all of it). It doesn't mean that you look through a magic eight ball and see the future-- it means that the person who has that gift uses it to tell other believers a message from God. Notebook Question: Why would it be 'nothing' if you didn't have love with the gift of prophecy? *And if I had understanding of all of God's secret plans and possessed all knowledge... but didn't love others, it would be nothing. Basically, "Knowledge maybe power" but love gives everything. This means that wisdom is great, but if we only think of ourselves, it kinda gets wasted. *If I had such faith that I could move mountains... but didn't love others, I would be nothing. We read in Thursday's verse where Jesus said if we had just a tiny bit of faith-- we could move mountains. If that's what a tiny bit of faith can do, can you imagine what a lot of it?? There would be displaced mountain ranges all over the world! But still--- if you could do all of that-- but didn't do it out of love, who would it help? Would it just be a way to show your power? There are 3 questions I want us to think about, and write down. 1. What good are gifts, if you don't love others OR do them for others? 2. Think about this-- if you don't love others (if you were mean to other-- a know it all, a person without compassion in the heart), would you even have anyone around to use your gifts on? Would they do anyone any good? 3. If you didn't love others, would you even want to use your spiritual gifts? Would there be a point? God gave/gives everyone gifts to use for a reason, and He gives love in our hearts for a reason. That reason is so love and wisdom and faith can go hand in hand to help the world. People can tell when you are sincere about something and when you are just doing it because you have too. Love can't be faked-- it has to come straight from your heart. Lets nurture our hearts. Lets not let our hearts harden. Lets use the wisdom, faith, and compassion of our heart to use our gifts to help others. We all have something-- some kind of gift from God. Lets use them to help people--- not just to show our 'power.' Next week, we will be learning about 1 Corinthians 13:13. Below are the verses for your homework this week... (BTW, if you are blogging this you can link your blog in the comments of this post that way people can read and get ideas from you :) ) Verses for next week's lesson: Tuesday~ Matthrew 6:12 Wednesday~ Matthew 23:5 Thursday~ Matthew 23:6 Friday~ Colossians 1:9-10 Saturday~ 1 Corinthians 13:3 Remember, there are daily discussions on these verses over at my facebook page (I'd love for you to join in :) ). If you have any comments, please post them below. I'd love to get your feedback. What are you getting out of these verses? Much love, Kelly
First, my heart goes out to the people in my city (Calgary) and surrounding townships who were affected by the surprise floods last week. Over 75,000 people were evacuated. Thousands lost their homes, cars, belongings. At least four people lost their lives. Schools are closed even though this was supposed to be the last week of classes. The downtown core was flooded, which was unexpected. The area is in a state of emergency, and we’re all still in shock. Fortunately my home is on high ground so my family is safe and dry.
And now for the news that makes me want to do this:
For the past two weeks, Martina Boone at Adventures in YA and Children’s Publishing has been celebrating the blog’s success. Well, that was nothing compared to the news she got last week.
